Long thought to be a cross between a China Rose (R. chinensis) and an Alpine Rose (R. pendulina), Peter Beales in Classic Roses writes, ‘Authoritative opinions vary, but chromosome counts do seem to prove conclusively the error of this assumption. Thus I have placed them [The Boursaults] here [Cassiorhodon (Cinnamomeae) family]’
