About This Site
The idea for this site came about while we were designing embroidery patterns based on Redouté’s roses. Finding a complete online catalogue of Redouté’s rose portraits with up-to-date information proved harder than we first imagined. The roses Redouté painted are amongst some of the most well-loved botanical art in the world – surely we thought – there must be others who would enjoy a web site devoted to the artist and his roses. As far as we were aware, no such web site existed so we set about creating one.
www.pictureofroses.com was launched April, 2007 and continues to be developed as time permits. We hope that this site encourages a wider appreciation for both the artist, Joseph-Pierre Redouté and the Old Roses he painted.

Ps. Just in case you’re wondering why some of the words on this site seem to be spelt ‘differently’ – we’re based in New Zealand and were raised using the British English spelling system. For example, a word like ‘colour’ you might spell as ‘color’. We hope the differences are not a hindrance to your enjoyment of the site and if you do spot an error that you think is a real mistake, please let us know.
